Revamped home tailored to perfection

Nestled in the urban context of Varanasi, this 4,800 sq ft home by The Whitespace Architects is a renovation project characterized by a contemporary modern aesthetic.

The family’s desire to expand, organize and segregate guests resulted in an open-plan design that prioritized natural light and cross-ventilation, further enhancing the overall design considerations.

Reorganizing spaces

The internal planning of the house was redone so as to embrace the functional changes as well as the future requirements of the family. The former living room was divided into formal and family spaces that would cater to the guests and maintain privacy for the family at the same time.

Additional modifications included the incorporation of storage and utility spaces, as well as a separate staff entrance. An outdoor seating area was created beneath the existing porch to strengthen the connection between the interior and exterior spaces and increase natural light. As a retrofitting renovation project, the existing load-bearing structures were redesigned and reinforced with structural steel sections to ensure stability.

Informal synchrony 

House is divided into formal and informal living rooms, one for formal guests and second for casual chaos of the day. Separated by a sliding door, the formal and informal living areas each possess a unique aesthetic that, when merged into a single space, complements each other & can cater a larger group of guests. 

The formal living features a tranquil blue palette, creating a serene and calming atmosphere that promotes relaxation. The application of fluted fabric sandwich glass on the door creates a translucent illusion between the two, thus, creating the perfect visibility.

Separated by a slider, the informal living room formal living room boasts of an earthy brown color palette, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere with its luxurious textures and elegant furnishings. Gold and bronze accents serve as a unifying element in both the rooms, adding a touch of rustic and luxurious aesthetic. 

Material mood board

The color scheme is neutral and beige, creating a calm and timeless atmosphere. The use of various textures, from smooth satin to rough finishes, adds depth and visual interest to the spaces. The TV console in the informal living room is adorned by stucco lime plaster that further adds to the aesthetic of the space. 
The dining room features a natural wallpaper, adding a touch of freshness and organic appeal to the space. The wallpaper’s botanical patterns or earthy hues create a serene and inviting atmosphere, complementing the room.

The corridor’s standout feature is its ceiling pattern, which perfectly complements the Italian flooring, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the interior. This intentional design decision ensures that even transitional spaces, often ignored, are given a distinct and captivating character that seamlessly integrates with the home’s existing ambiance.

Case of customisation

Each bedroom is crafted around a unique theme, tailored to reflect the individual tastes of its occupant. Thoughtfully chosen furniture and meticulously curated decor contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere, promoting relaxation and tranquility. The use of various shades of brown, a particular favorite among the residents, adds a cohesive and comforting element to each room. 

The design process embraced a sustainable approach, incorporating elements of customization that effectively repurposed discarded stones and veneer. These materials were creatively transformed into functional and aesthetically pleasing handles and patterned ceiling features. 
The planter wall positioned adjacent to the television unit was meticulously customized to incorporate a functional and chirpy pocket designed to securely hold the planter. This playful design choice serves to enhance the overall sense of vitality and liveliness within the primary gathering space.
The hand-painted wallpapers adorning both the living room and staircase area serve as exceptional expressions of customization, transcending mere decoration. These meticulously crafted works of art infuse the space with a unique and personalized character, elevating the overall aesthetic to new heights.
The design of this home skillfully harmonizes elements of warmth and embracement with a progressive and forward-thinking approach, creating a space that is both inviting and contemporary. This harmonious balance results in a living environment that is both timeless reflecting the client’s aspirations.
